The Swimmers’ Club Belgaum was established in 1980 with the aim of promoting the sport of swimming in Belagavi, Karnataka. It was officially registered with the Registrar of Cooperative Societies in 1995. The club has been instrumental in organizing coaching camps for children of all ages, providing regular training sessions to enhance their technique and endurance, and facilitating their participation in swimming meets at various levels, including district, state, national, and international competitions. Over the past four decades, the club has trained numerous aspiring swimmers, who have brought great honor and recognition to Belagavi, Karnataka, and India.

Around 20 years ago, the club decided to extend its services to disadvantaged and underprivileged children in the city. In 2002, the club organized its first coaching camp specifically for such children. Approximately 200 children with physical disabilities, visual impairments, hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities, and orphans participated in the camp. The club provided all necessary facilities for the children, including transportation, swimming costumes, daily snacks, and even conducted medical check-ups. It is worth mentioning that every child enjoyed the camp and learned swimming within a period of 21 days. Since then, this camp has become an annual event in the club’s swimming calendar and has been held for the past 22 years.

The club’s commitment to these young swimmers goes beyond teaching them how to swim. Promising and enthusiastic swimmers receive coaching throughout the year. Those who demonstrate exceptional talent are selected to represent their state, nation, and even participate in international competitions.

It is with great pride that we inform you that seven differently-abled swimmers from the club have represented India and have collectively won 60 international medals. Raghavendra Anvekar, one of the swimmers, has been honored with the President’s Award, the Ekalavya Award, and served as the SVEEP Icon of Belagavi District for the 2019 Lok Sabha Election. Rajesh Shinde achieved a significant milestone by successfully crossing the English Channel in 2008, becoming the first differently-abled individual from South India to accomplish this feat. Additionally, five differently-abled children have secured government sector jobs.

We are immensely proud of the Swimmers’ Club Belgaum and its contributions to the development of swimming talent among children, particularly those facing challenges or disadvantaged circumstances. The club’s efforts have not only helped individuals achieve personal success but have also brought glory to our city, state, and country.

One of the remarkable success stories of the Swimmers’ Club Belgaum is the training of Master Moin Junnedi. Moin, a 20-year-old individual, is afflicted with a condition called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, which results in a lack of calcium in his bones. As a result, Moin experiences stunted growth and is physically disabled below the waist. Throughout his life, he has endured more than 300 fractures in his body. However, due to the unwavering determination of Coach Umesh Kalghatgi, the support of other coaches, and the encouragement of his parents, Moin has been able to learn swimming and has represented India on three occasions. His exceptional achievements even earned him a well-deserved gold medal.

Despite the challenges posed by his condition, Moin’s spirit and resilience have driven him to excel in swimming. The guidance and training provided by the dedicated coaches at the Swimmers’ Club Belgaum have played a crucial role in his accomplishments. Moin’s journey stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, support, and a nurturing environment in helping individuals overcome adversity and achieve remarkable feats.

The Swimmers’ Club Belgaum takes immense pride in Moin’s achievements and recognizes him as an inspiration to others. His determination and accomplishments serve as a reminder that with the right support and opportunities, individuals can surpass their limitations and make significant contributions in their chosen fields.
